a violoncello, and small double base; they
executed, reasonably well, several of our
Bach's symphonies, different from those
printed in England: all the music here is
in MS. But what I liked most was the
vocal part by la Padrona della Casa, or
lady of the house; she had an agreeable
well-toned voice, a good shake, the
right sort of taste and expression, and sung
sitting down, with the paper on
the common instrumental desk, wholly
without affectation, several pretty airs of
Traetta.

Upon the whole, this concert was
much upon a level with our own private
concerts among gentlemen in England,
the performers were sometimes in and
sometimes out; in general, however,
the music was rather better chosen, the
execution more brilliant and full of fire,
and the singing much nearer perfection
than we can often boast on such occa-
sions; not, indeed, in point of voice or
